How Hedley Studios Scaled Electric Cars with Cleantron’s Li-ion Swappable Modular Battery

Hedley Studios is the UK’s pioneering technology company in electric mobility. Known for electrifying the design of classic cars as the Bentley Blower Jnr, Headley blends heritage with innovation. But to bring their growing car family to life, they needed more than great design: they needed a modular, scalable battery solution that could be used across a range of micro cars with varying power requirements.

This case study shows how Cleantron enabled Hedley Studios to scale their cars using its 48V lithium battery technology and scalable MPC architecture, establishing a new standard for performance, speed, and integration in the battery for the light electric vehicle industry.

Client Challenge: Scale, Without Reinventing the Battery Each Time

Before partnering with Cleantron, Headley Studios relied on tailored battery packs built for each individual car. This approach worked well for a limited use case, and therefore caused development blockades.

“The battery was customized and worked well for the Bugatti, but it wasn’t engineered for parallel operations. We had to develop a new battery for every product.” Mr. Keno Mario, Head of special projects

To support growing demand and develop multiple cars efficiently, the team was looking for a scalable 48V lithium battery that would:

  • Enable integration into multiple car types (4–40 kWh)

  • Be compact, energy-dense, and swappable

  • Batteries with space efficient design

Be engineered and manufactured by a nearby battery supplier for faster resolution and co-development

Solution: Flexible Battery Architecture for Performance and Versatility

We engineered and manufactured for Hedley Studios a performance-oriented vehicle 48V power supply system based on our proprietary MPC (Modular Power Core) architecture. This architecture allowed for scaling using Cleantron’s P4X moduleenabling Hedley Studios to reuse the same system across multiple projects.

“We visited Cleantron and were impressed with the team, the roadmap, and their readiness to provide early samples of the P4X. This allowed us to integrate Cleantron batteries into the first prototype in under 6 months.” Keno, Head of special projects

Key advantages of the Cleantron battery solution:

  • MPC architecture for modular scaling

  • The P4X is a very compact energy-dense lithium-ion battery module

  • The P4X is well exchangeable
  • Seamless integration across vehicle sizes and layouts

  • Local support with engineering and testing collaboration

Cleantron’s 48V lithium battery solution was successfully deployed in:

Client Outcomes: Fast Prototyping and Long-Term Scalability

Thanks to Cleantron’s modular battery system, Hedley Studios transformed its development process. What once required unique battery engineering per model now became one scalable battery system used across five cars.

“Once we got them working, the cars were fast, powerful, and lightweight. We now have five different products based on the same battery architecture.”  Keno Mario, Head of special projects

Client Key outcomes:

  • Rapid development, with the first prototype completed in less than 6 months

  • Expansion into new market segments, like road-legal quadricycles

  • 5 car models powered by one modular battery system

  • More rapid collaboration with on-site support and open feedback loops

“The collaboration was transparent and fast. Cleantron truly partnered with us to improve the product and speed up the development process.” Keno Mario, Head of special projects

How Cleantron Helped Van Raam To Reinvent Reliability in E-Bike Batteries

As Europe’s demand for special need bikes grows at an annual rate of 16.9%, manufacturers like Van Raam faced a critical question: who can supply battery systems at the right scale?

Van Raam, a major player of custom bikes for elderly people or people with disabilities, faced rising challenges with their existing e-bike battery solution.

This case study shows how Cleantron improved Van Raam’s product reliability and helped them grow, using advanced lithium-ion battery packs and a reliable battery management system (BMS).

About Van Raam: Engineering Mobility for All

Van Raam, based in the Netherlands, specializes in adaptive bicycles—tandems, tricycles, and side-by-side models—designed for riders with physical or cognitive impairments. Their mission is to provide independent mobility to everyone. With increasing demand in Europe and North America, Van Raam’s success relies not just on mechanical design. Of great importance is the consistent performance of every component—especially the e-bike li-ion battery powering their solutions.

What Battery Problems Did Van Raam Face?

When Van Raam started to collaborate with Cleantron, their team had a battery design in place but faced significant operational bottlenecks. The batteries lacked assembly-friendly design, they suffered from flaws, and failed to meet the durability standards required for daily use. More critically, inconsistent battery supply caused repeated interruptions in Van Raam’s production schedule.

Van Raam needed a partner who could deliver both technical reliability and a stable supply chain. They were looking for a solution to prevent field breakdowns, simplify operations, and keep up with fast-growing demand — driven by an aging population and the rising need for adaptive mobility.

More than 100,000 batteries. Zero major field issues. How did Cleantron get Van Raam there?

How Did Cleantron Solve Van Raam’s Battery Packs Problems?

Cleantron responded by adopting its unique customer centered approach: listening closely, designing precisely, and delivering consistently.

Working with Van Raam’s engineers, Cleantron designed custom NMC lithium ion battery packs optimized for adaptive e-bikes. By anticipating potential issues, Cleantron proposed detailed improvements including a waterproof housing and a simplified startup interface. Most notably, Cleantron developed a proprietary battery management system (BMS) tailored to Van Raam’s needs, solving persistent electronic reliability issues.

How did this solution impact Van Raam’s business? With over 100,000 batteries sourced from Cleantron, Van Raam likely reduced system malfunctions affecting e-bikes by more than 90%—based on internal estimates and typical industry performance baselines. Even during global component shortages, Cleantron maintained 98% on-time delivery performance for Van Raam’s growing battery demand. This allowed Van Raam’s supply chain to run smoothly.

Most importantly, customers began associating Van Raam’s bikes with trust and durability. One customer described his new Van Raam electric bike as ‘something he can finally rely on.’ For many, the improved battery wasn’t just a technical matter. It restored confidence in independent mobility. This noticeably helped the brand to grow at double-digit rates annualy. Between 2021 and 2024, Van Raam’s annual unit sales increased by more than 20%.

Why Cleantron?

Cleantron is an European leader in advanced battery manufacturing, offering advanced lithium-ion battery technology for mobility applications—from circular e-bike battery systems to light electric vehicles battery. Each product is powered by custom engineering, robust BMS integration, and a commitment to long-term reliability.
